- Recognize that typing indicators are not just status signals. They influence how users perceive waiting, attention, and conversation flow.
- Understand the role of perceived time. Some interfaces use delayed or extended feedback to make responses feel more deliberate, but unnecessary delays can also keep users waiting longer than needed.
- Be mindful of anticipation loops. A typing indicator creates a sense of expectation:
- The user sees activity.
- They anticipate a response.
- The message arrives.
- The cycle can repeat with the next response.
This can make conversations feel more engaging, but it can also create unnecessary tension if overused.
- Handle typing states carefully. A disappearing and reappearing indicator can create uncertainty when someone starts typing, stops, edits, or abandons a message. The interface should communicate activity without encouraging users to constantly monitor it.
- Design communication features around trust. Status indicators should answer useful questions:
- Is someone responding?
- Is the system working?
- Should I wait or move on?
- Avoid using uncertainty as a substitute for engagement. Good interaction design creates confidence and clarity instead of making users feel like they need to keep watching.
