- Do not measure activity alone. More clicks, longer sessions, or more notifications do not automatically mean a better product.
- Measure outcomes:
- Did users complete their goal?
- Did they succeed faster?
- Did they make fewer mistakes?
- Track meaningful signals:
- Task completion rate.
- Time to complete.
- Error frequency.
- User retention.
- Satisfaction.
- Avoid optimizing one metric at the expense of the experience:
- More engagement can mean more confusion.
- More steps can mean more friction.
- More notifications can mean more annoyance.
- Combine quantitative and qualitative data:
- Numbers show what happened.
- Research explains why.
- The best metric is not how long users stay. It is how successfully they accomplish what they came to do.
